Some more activities

We hope that we have already suggested some interesting ways to occupy yourselves whilst staying at La Carrière. But here are a few more activities that you might be interested in.

Fishing is a popular local activity - licences which cover the Maine et Loire Départment are readily available from the local tabacs. In the immediate area, there is the camp-site at Vernoil and a nice lake at Mouliherne. And of course there is the mighty Loire.

Golf is available at the 72 par course at Baugé (less than a half hour drive). It is described as ‘sensational’ and ‘not to be missed’ by one of the specialist Loire Valley golf holiday companies (

Horse riding - can be arranged at the riding school in Vernoil.

Swimming - swimming in the lake at the campsite at Bourgueil and at Hommes (about 15 km east from La Carrière).  There is also a pool at Noyant.

Motor racing - the event is the Le Mans 24 hour with around a quarter of a million people attending; the race is in mid-June and there are events all through the previous week (including the drivers’ parade through the centre of Le Mans on Friday .  There is also a  Classic event with vintage racing cars .  The circuit (the longest in the world at more than 13 km) is on the outskirts of the city - about an hour’s drive from La Carrière via Noyant, Le Lude and the A20 motorway - the circuit exit is clearly signed.

Football - you could always support our local team (Vernantes-Vernoil), and the ever-promising Saumur. For the big time, Le Mans and Angers are in  the the (top) League 1..

Basketball is very popular, and there is a top league team at Cholet - south of Saumur. Le Mans is also in this league.

Cycling - at all levels and everywhere! There are four bikes of varying sizes, plus a toddler’s two wheeler, at La Carrière - two children’s helmets but we do not provide adults helmets. There is also a bike hire shop near the railway station in Saumur.  One of our guests particularly enjoyed biking from Brérémont to Savonnières, hiring bikes at Brérémont.   In 2013 we had the fun of the Tour de France passing right past La Carrière.
